Choosing the right business structure is a pivotal decision for any entrepreneur. In this article, we demystify the options available to you, laying out the groundwork for your business journey.
Starting as a sole trader is straightforward. It’s a one-person show where you’re in full control. Register with HMRC, set up a dedicated business bank account, and you’re good to go. Remember, all sole traders will align with the standard tax year ending on 5th April. Keep an eye out for our upcoming blog on bookkeeping software to streamline your financial tracking. Taxes? We’ll delve into that soon, explaining how your sales and expenses determine your tax dues.
The Power of Collaboration A partnership is born when two or more individuals unite in business. It operates similarly to a sole trader setup, but with a crucial agreement detailing profit shares, salaries, and exit strategies. Partnerships need separate registration with HMRC and have their own tax returns, with partners taxed on their profit shares. Plus, partners can earn interest on loans provided to the partnership.
In a limited liability partnership, each partner’s risk is capped at their investment amount, and they pay income tax on their share of the profits. This specialized structure won’t be covered further here, but we’re available for a deeper discussion if you’re interested.
A limited company stands apart as its own legal entity, owned by shareholders and run by directors. It requires a company-named bank account, as the funds belong to the company, not the owners. After corporation tax, profits are shared among shareholders.
