What makes a good business?

As business advisors and mentors we meet all sizes of businesses and come across a variety of trades and skill sets and what often frustrates me most are those clients that don’t realise what a great business they could have if they paid for some decent advice and listened to what was suggested to them.

Now I’m not wanting to sound big-headed or anything but quite often I meet business owners that could really make something of what they do but because they don’t organise themselves or take advice, they come back year after year and nothing changes.

Some of the best clients I have take a real interest in what they do and the bits they don’t understand they involve us, or other professionals in and they listen and take advice. Together we work as a team and we both enjoy the journey and the successes and all the bits in between.

The best businesses take time to understand what they are really good at and who they are selling to.  They keep an eye on the costs but they value expertise and take professional advice be it from a solicitor, surveyor, accountant or tax advisor.

They are honest, reliable and realistic and they deliver.

Sometimes trying to cut corners and keep costs down can really come back to bite you. Building up a good business with great staff and an understanding of your internal systems and processes will mean that you keep your clients happy and get paid for what you do without a fuss. Clients will come back to you because you deliver what you say, you charge a fair price and you treat them well.

None of this is “rocket science” but you’d be surprised how many businesses do not manage the basics.

If you’d like some no-nonsense sensible advice then book a call with me and let’s see if I can help you make a few changes.
